Small Business Finds Cost Savings With Simple Changes
[Cooperation Magazine was cut from 8 pages to 4 and issues increased from 2 to 4 each year as part of a Marketing Makeover. All writing and photography by Carolyn Sampson. When Dakota Electric Association joined the Touchstone Energy consortium of electric cooperatives, Carolyn led the re-branding effort, redesigning newsletters, brochures, letterhead, business cards and more.]
Small businesses face many unique challenges, and among these challenges is managing energy costs. While large commercial and industrial companies often employ full-time energy managers to help research options for minimizing energy costs, most small businesses do not have the resources. Energy management duties usually fall to the business owner who has little time to spend researching energy-saving alternatives. That's why Dakota Electric offers experienced Energy Experts® to help businesses identify ways to cut energy costs and improve their bottom line.
The Burnhaven Veterinary Hospital, established by Dr. Roger Larson in 1976, is an example of a small professional office that benefited from these services.

Fulfilling Childhood Dreams
[The CAP Agency Annual Report was reduced from 32 pages to 16, allowing the organization to publish a full-color piece for the same cost as their previous 2-color report. All writing, photography and graphic design by Carolyn Sampson.]
Head Start para-professional Sophal Chai's journey to the CAP Agency in
Rosemount was a long one. Ten years ago she was a wife and mother of
four young boys, running a jewelry business in her native Cambodia. But
her family faced an uncertain future when her 37-year old husband was
diagnosed with cancer.
As Sophal held her dying husband's hand, he made
her promise to move with their children to the United States of America.
Cambodia is a small country, she explained, and her husband believed
his children would live longer, healthier lives in America.
Sophal wasted no time preparing for her new life in the United States.
Soon she enrolled in English classes, the only adult in a group of
six-year olds. Every week she closed her shop for one hour to attend the
class, quickly progressing through the first four levels. At the fifth
level, only five students remained and the teacher could not afford to
hold the class for such a small group. Stlll not satisfied with her
proficiency, Sophal paid the teacher $20 per month to come to her home
one hour each day for a year.
When Sophal finally moved to America, her children initialy remained
behind in Cabodia with her mother. With no family in the U.S. except a
second cousin, she had few prospects for supporting four children.

Economic Development
Because they are owned by their members, Minnesota
electric cooperatives are an integral part of the communities they
serve. With more than 65 years of experience in providing
affordable and reliable electric service, cooperatives are a
ready-made delivery system for improving the economic health of
their rural and suburban communities.
As a result, cooperatives do more than just supply power.
They aggressively work to attract new businesses and help
expand existing businesses. Cooperatives often undertake
projects that improve infrastructure and quality of life,
cornerstones of economic development and job creation. Cooperatives,
for example, spur job creation by guaranteeing zero-interest
loans secured through the USDA Rural Development Service.
Projects funded by these loans benefit entire communities, not
just areas served by electric cooperatives.
The economic development efforts of Minnesota electric
cooperatives are an extension of the rural electrification
program's original goal to provide a quality of life for all
citizens no matter where they live.

MREA Informational Brochure for State Legislators
State legislators receive piles of brochures and magazines from
organizations around the state. To stand out from the crowd, the photo
of the state capitol was replaced with a photo of electric utility
lineworkers and a bucket truck, more clearly communicating who the
brochure was about instead of who it was for. The inside was also
redesigned for easier reading.
